Our medical teams

Our network of surgeons, doctors, nurses, anesthetists... is the beating heart of our action. On a daily basis, these volunteer healthcare professionals work to improve access to healthcare for the most disadvantaged children.

An international network of surgeons, doctors and healthcare professionals

La Chaîne de l’Espoir relies on an international network of committed healthcare professionals, including surgeons, doctors, nurses, anaesthetists and medical specialists. Cardiac, orthopedic, visceral, reconstructive, neurosurgery, medical imaging, anesthesia-intensive care: they all volunteer their time to guarantee access to quality care for the most vulnerable populations, especially children.

Medical missions and training of medical teams

Every year, our volunteer teams take part in almost a hundred medical missions. The expertise and know-how of these healthcare professionals are not limited to providing life-saving surgery in the countries where we operate, but also help to strengthen the skills of local doctors. The aim of each mission is to train local healthcare professionals in surgical techniques and medical practices. This approach aims to empower local teams, thus guaranteeing the sustainability and quality of medical care.

Itinerant missions in rural areas

In developing countries, surgery is concentrated in large cities. In order to provide care as close as possible to people’s needs, our volunteer medical teams take part in week-long itinerant missions, supporting local health professionals. Announced in advance on local community radio stations, in newspapers and during religious ceremonies, these missions are impressive in terms of the number of consultations and operations carried out: the teams take turns in several consultation rooms and operating theatres. More than a hundred children can benefit from an operation. These missions also contribute to the training of young local doctors.

“My first itinerant mission in Togo? An anesthetic and surgical marathon! Above all, you need to be in good physical condition: 125 children operated on in five days! And solid mental preparation: knowing how to adapt quickly to the environment, to a new team and to the resources made available. And when the finish line is crossed, the collective reward is the smile on the faces of the children and their parents.

Remote ultrasound sessions

Thanks to our echoes® program, specialist doctors from the La Chaîne de l’Espoir hospital network assist their colleagues during live remote ultrasound sessions. These health professionals can thus assist in the examination of young patients abroad, provide invaluable advice, and offer a second opinion in order to obtain the best possible diagnosis. This diagnostic aid also contributes to the ongoing training of local medical staff, and helps identify potential needs for skills enhancement.
