WorldHumanitarian Day 2023

This Saturday, August 19, is World Humanitarian Day.

Armed conflicts, wars, extreme climatic events, famine…: humanitarian crises have been multiplying in recent years. La Chaîne de l’Espoir plays an essential role ininternational aid, thanks in particular to our humanitarian workers. For the past 30 years, they have been assessing medical and training needs, building and equipping medical facilities, and intervening in emergency situations during natural or humanitarian disasters.

World Humanitarian Day honors all our aid workers, who work tirelessly to save lives and bring hope to those in need.

What is World Humanitarian Day?

This Saturday, August 19, 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, which killed 22 aid workers, including the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.

Five years later, the United Nations General Assembly designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day.

This day pays tribute to all the humanitarian workers who help the millions of people affected by war, famine, epidemics, climatic or industrial disasters all over the world.

World Humanitarian Day 2023: #QuoiQuilArrive

TheUN has set itself the target of helping 250 million people by 2023: ten times more than in 2003.

Humanitarian workers continue to face complex crises where conflict, political instability and natural disasters escalate to the point of blatant disregard for international humanitarian law, as in Afghanistan, where Afghan women are banned from working in NGOs.

The work of these everyday heroes, exposed to major risks and threats, is more difficult and more dangerous.

That’s why this year’s World Humanitarian Day campaign reaffirms humanitarians ‘ unwaveringcommitment to meeting the needs of people, whoever they are, wherever they are, and #WhateverHappens.

La Chaîne de l’Espoir: a humanitarian NGO

La Chaîne de l’Espoir has been active in crisis and conflict zones for 30 years. We intervene to provide emergency medical assistance to populations and promote surgical care for victims:

  • providing vulnerable populations with access to medical and surgical care
  • contribute to strengthening local medical capabilities (training medical staff, building and rehabilitating hospitals, sending essential consumables and equipment, etc.).

With the support of all our vital links: mission leaders, doctors, volunteers, employees or local workers, we are committed to providing vital aid in crisis situations, for example:

  • War in Ukraine : 17.29 tons ofequipment (operating room consumables, and biomedical equipment such as ultra-portable ultrasound scanners, resuscitation equipment, etc.) shipped in 2022 to various Ukrainian hospitals.

  • Humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan : according to the World Food Program (WFP), 3.9 million children are currently suffering from severe malnutrition in Afghanistan. In response to this situation, La Chaîne de l’Espoir opened a nutrition unit at the Institut Médical Français pour la Mère et l’Enfant in Kabul in March 2022. Since its opening, we have treated 290 cases of severe malnutrition and 1906 consultations.
