World Food Day 2023
What are the objectives of World Food Day?
Every year, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) celebrates World Food Day on October 16, in commemoration of its founding in 1945. The aim is to raise awareness and encourage action on behalf of the world’s hungry, and to promote healthier food for all.
What is the theme of World Food Day 2023?
“Water is life, water nourishes us. Leave no one behind”. In 2023, World Food Day is dedicated to water, an essential element for life and food… And yet, even today, more than a third of the world’s population still lives without access to drinking water, according to the United Nations (UN). Water is an invaluable yet limited natural resource. Without it, there would be neither food nor life. In 2023, the FAO is emphasizing the importance of water use in agriculture and production, as well as vital access to it.

Food aid: what does La Chaîne de l’Espoir do?
Many factors can leave populations vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition: conflicts, economic crises, natural disasters… And according to the latest report on “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World”, the situation is worrying:
- Between 691 million and 783 million people worldwide went hungry in 2022; that’s over 122 million more people who have fallen into hunger since 2019.
- Of the 768 million people who will be undernourished in 2020, 282 million live in Africa and 418 million in Asia.

To combat child malnutrition in Africa and Asia, La Chaîne de l’Espoir is involved in the following areas:
- In Afghanistan, where the food crisis has worsened considerably in recent months. According to the United Nations World Food Program, nearly 4 million Afghan children suffer from acute malnutrition. That’s why, in March 2022, La Chaîne de l’Espoir opened a nutrition unit at the Institut Médical Français pour la Mère et l’Enfant in Kabul. The unit treats severe malnutrition in children and pregnant and breast-feeding women requiring vital care.
- For children from disadvantaged families, it can be difficult to get enough to eat every day. Yet it’s essential to improve health and concentration in the classroom. That’s why, in Togo, La Chaîne de l’Espoir is setting up school canteens in 16 schools in Lomé to provide pupils with a nutritious meal every day.
