World Human Solidarity Day 2023

Human solidarity, a fundamental value advocated by the United Nations (UN), takes on a special lustre every year on World Human Solidarity Day, December 20.

This event, decreed by the United Nations in 2006, represents a significant opportunity to unite individuals, communities and nations around a common, universal cause: building a fairer world and supporting those who need it most.

What is World Human Solidarity Day?

The overall aim of World Solidarity Day is to promote awareness and collective action in favor of international solidarity. It aims to encourage individuals, communities and nations to work together to tackle global challenges, promote equality and support the vulnerable – as La Chaîne de l’Espoir has been doing for nearly 30 years:

  • Caring for and operating on children and mothers in France and abroad who are faced with urgent medical needs and lack the technical and financial resources required in their own countries.
  • Foster the development of local teams’ medical skills by deploying our international network of volunteer medical experts, an initiative designed to empower local medical teams in the face of complex healthcare challenges.
  • Build and equip medical infrastructures in regions with weak health systems, to sustainably strengthen medical capacity and meet the growing needs of these communities.
  • Early detection of health problems, notably within our dedicated school health programs, an approach that aims to identify and treat potential risks at the earliest possible age, thus guaranteeing a healthier future.

The date of World Solidarity Day

In 2023, we’ll be celebrating World Solidarity Day on December 20 – as we have every year since 2006. The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed December 20 of each year International Human Solidarity Day (resolution A/RES/60/209). This year, once again, it’s an opportunity to remind nations of the importance of :

  • Commemorating cohesion and diversity;
  • Meeting international commitments;
  • Raise public awareness of international solidarity in its entirety;
  • Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ;
  • Encourage initiatives to combat poverty.

What can you do to mark World Solidarity Day?

As the year draws to a close, and because waiting is not experienced in the same way everywhere in the world, and because certain situations are vital, we have launched our year-end campaign: Objective 0 days, the more you give, the less they wait.

In 2023, thanks to the generous support we received and the mobilization of all the links in La Chaîne de l’Espoir, we were able to help many families and rescue thousands of children waiting for vital care. Unfortunately, due to the various crises facing the world today (political, financial, security….), donations are falling! And the terrible waiting list for sick children continues to grow...So, more than ever, on this World Day of Solidarity, they need you!

The more you give, the less they wait! Let’s unite to shorten the time it takes to care for sick children by making a donation.
