International Human Solidarity Day 2024
In 2006, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 20 to be International Human Solidarity Day. At the heart of this date on the calendar is the concept of solidarity, which governs the decisions of the United Nations Organization (UNO). Solidarity is also at the heart of La Chaîne de l'Espoir's efforts to provide access to healthcare for the most vulnerable. Here's how it works.
Solidarity at the heart of La Chaîne de l’Espoir’s actions
At La Chaîne de l’Espoir, there’s no shortage of examples of solidarity. Created to combat the injustice of place of birth, our association exists thanks to the commitment of men and women united by a common desire: to give the most vulnerable access to healthcare.
La Chaîne de l’Espoir volunteers, for example, are mobilized and active on a daily basis. Here’s what it’s like to volunteer with La Chaîne de l’Espoir:
- In the regions, whether in our branches or as host families, volunteers are admirable for their solidarity. In our branches, they organize events, develop partnerships, help raise the profile of La Chaîne de l’Espoir, etc. When they take in a sick child, volunteers provide a stable, comforting environment during this difficult period in the child’s life, from the moment he or she arrives until he or she returns home, generally for an average of two months.
- In French hospitals, “marraines soleil” and “parrains soleil” visit children who, while hospitalized, find themselves alone for various reasons (geographical distance, absent parents, siblings to manage, etc.). Thanks to this individualized accompaniment, the child benefits from a presence as well as precious emotional and moral support to alleviate the emotional deficiencies linked to separation and hospitalization.
- In the countries where we operate, volunteers in medical, biomedical or infrastructure-related professions offer their time and expertise by taking part in surgical missions. Sick children are operated on and medical and paramedical teams are trained.
The end of the year, a time for solidarity
Like every year, La Chaîne de l’Espoir launches its new communications and fundraising campaign. But this year, our campaign message is changing.
While there is always the question of the interminable wait that sick children face in our countries of intervention to benefit from an operation, our credo is now ” The more you give, the less they wait “.
Beyond the expectations still present, this new message highlights the key role played by La Chaîne de l’Espoir donors, who are undoubtedly the finest example of solidarity.
