What is the International Day of Non-Violence?
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, this day, which coincides with the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of India’s independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy of non-violence, encourages societies to promote peace and adopt non-violent approaches to discrimination.
What actions are carried out in support of the International Day of Non-Violence?
To mark the International Day of Non-Violence, La Chaîne de l’Espoir is reiterating its commitment to children exposed to conflict and violence, highlighting its prevention, care and support initiatives in vulnerable areas.
Since 2019, through projects such as “Ma Santé, Mon École : un Enjeu Collectif au Togo“, we have been developing health and well-being education to raise children’s awareness of non-violent behavior and protect them from gender-based violence. Trained students lead awareness-raising campaigns on non-violence, sexual and reproductive health, and water, hygiene and sanitation.
Teacher Ambassadors for Non-Violence (EANOV), trained as part of the “Ma Santé, Mon École : un Enjeu Collectif” project, play a central role in promoting positive discipline in schools. Using respectful, participative teaching practices, they establish a caring school climate by integrating classroom management methods that encourage mutual respect, self-regulation and non-violent conflict resolution. These teachers establish “pedagogical contracts” with students to foster dialogue and a harmonious learning environment.
