International Day of Families 2023: the family at the heart of our actions in France
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed May 15 as the International Day of Families. Today, this day celebrates its 30th anniversary, and it’s an opportunity to talk about the fundamental role of our foster families: without them, seriously ill children would simply not be able to come to France for surgery.
Family Day: what theme for 2023?

In view of demographic projections – there are expected to be 9.8 billion people in the world by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100 – the United Nations has chosen the theme ” Demographic trends and families ” for the 2023 edition of the Day of Families.
On the UN’s initiative, the Day will be punctuated by a number of highlights, including the launch of a reference document on ” The impact of demographic trends on families “, the presentation of the World Social Report 2023, and an overview of policy recommendations to address the above-mentioned demographic trends.
Family Day 2023: what role for families at La Chaîne de l’Espoir?
At La Chaîne de l’Espoir, when we say “families”, we of course mean ” host families “. Totally voluntary, they are one of our association’s essential links in welcoming children suffering from various pathologies to France and La Réunion.
Indeed, even if we work daily to ensure that a child can be cared for at home by a doctor in his or her own country, by training local teams or by building and equipping healthcare facilities, the transfer of children to France remains unavoidable. This transfer is all the more essential and even vital when these children suffer from complex illnesses such as heart disease, for example.

Family Day is therefore an opportunity to highlight our wonderful host families, without whom our action in favor of sick children could not be what it is today.
