International Children’s Rights Day 2023

Children’s Rights Day is celebrated every year on November 20. This date corresponds to the day in 1989 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Through its actions, La Chaîne de l’Espoir contributes to the protection, well-being, health and respect of children, whether in Nepal, Togo or India. Explanations.

Children’s Rights Day: what theme for 2023?

November 20, 2023 marks the 34th anniversary of the signing of the CRC, which, among other advances, introduces the concept of thebest interests of the child and transforms the child from an object of law into a subject of law.

Even though more than 30 years have passed since the CRC was signed, children’s rights are still not guaranteed throughout the world. Every day, millions of them fight to grow up in decent living conditions, to have the right to go to school, to be in good health or simply to live…

It’s easy to understand the theme chosen for the2023 edition of Children’s Rights Day: ” For every child, every right “. This theme, which sounds like a rallying cry, echoes the sad reality of children’s rights around the world.

Children’s Rights Day: where does La Chaîne de l’Espoir fit in?

As a medical NGO, our actions evoke article 24 of the CRC, which recognizes the “right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health, and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health“. We can mention, for example, these initiatives carried out in some of our countries of intervention:

  • in Nepal, we work alongside street children to offer them protection and care,
  • in Togo, we’re fighting violence in schools with the help of teachers, school heads, families and communities, and of course children, the first actors of change,
  • in India, we work with girls to deconstruct the prejudices and beliefs associated with menstruation,…

In fact, the 4 pillars of La Chaîne de l’Espoir’s actions – care and surgery, hospital construction and equipment, training and prevention and screening – share a common goal. Indeed, our aim is to enable every child, regardless of where they were born, to have access to quality care provided by local health professionals in hospital structures that meet international standards.

Finally, La Chaîne de l’Espoir is a member of the Children’s Group of the Coordination Humanitaire et Développement, and as such is committed to defending children’s rights internationally. We are convinced that constant, sustained attention to children and their rights is an important lever for initiating a virtuous circle towards achieving sustainable development and peace.

The Groupe Enfance and its members work in three main areas:

  • Influencing political decision-makers,
  • Strengthening the capacities of international solidarity players,
  • Raising awareness and mobilizing the general public for the realization of children’s rights.
