23/03/2021 – Arun can now have a field day

Watching Arun run and jump around, it’s hard to believe that just a few months ago his life was in serious danger. Suffering from a persistent ductus arteriosus and a narrowing of the aortic valve, this 18-month-old Cambodian baby was not growing well and was exhausted by the slightest movement. The diagnosis was made thanks to an ultrasound scan carried out remotely by Prof. Sidi and Prof. Deloche. Today, Arun is all grown up. He’s full of life and vitality, and can play normally with other children. And now it’s his parents’ and grandparents’ turn to be exhausted by his boundless energy, much to their delight. Once again, your generosity has made all the difference, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
07/09/2020 – All together to save Arun
In a large room, the curtains are drawn for a better view of the screen. Professors Daniel Sidi and Alain Deloche observe the ultrasound closely. Dr. Chiour wields the ultrasound probe, the ultrasound machine joystick to search the little boy’s chest. This little patient is Arun, just 18 months old. After a few adjustments, the evil appears: a persistent ductus arteriosus. This birth defect explains the boy’s intense fatigue and stunted growth. This child needs urgent care. Thanks to the very clear ultrasound images, Prof. Daniel Sidi and Prof. Alain Deloche had to make two immediate decisions that could save Arun’s life.

- First, the child had to be operated on for his persistent ductus arteriosus. This duct, which should have closed at the first cry, has remained open, rushing blood in the wrong direction.
- Secondly, regarding the malformation of his aortic valve, Prof. Sidi affirms that the narrowing is not tight enough to be corrected. We’ll just have to monitor the child over the next few years to make sure the narrowing doesn’t get any worse, otherwise surgery will be necessary.
Contrary to appearances, Little Arun and Dr. Chiour are in Phnom Penh. Professors Sidi and Deloche are in Paris… 10,000 kilometers separate them from their young patient! Thanks to telemedicine and the Echoes program, developed over many years by La Chaîne de l’Espoir, Arun’s heart was examined with precision.
Arun’s life is threatened
Arun, a poor child from the village of Poban, benefited from the most modern, precise and effective science and technology, thanks to this remote consultation.
But now Arun needs surgery. He will be operated on at the Phnom Penh Heart Hospital by the local surgical team trained by La Chaîne de l’Espoir.
The operation costs 2,500 euros, a sum that the boy’s father, a construction worker, can’t even imagine. He only earns the equivalent of 8 euros for each day he works… So how can he save his only son?
