Issa successfully undergoes heart surgery in Burkina Faso

23/03/2021 – A happy ending for Issa

Since birth, Issa had been showing worrying medical signs: high fevers, stunted growth, extreme fatigue… The diagnosis was clear: like Fanja and Arun, this 3-year-old Burkinabe baby was suffering from a persistent ductus arteriosus. Indispensable to the life of the foetus, this small blood vessel had not closed itself as it was supposed to during the birth of the baby. Added to this sad news is the health crisis and the suspended operations, including that of little Issa.

In spite of everything, thanks to your mobilization and the training work we’ve been carrying out with Burkinabe teams for several years, the operation was carried out in time at the Tengandogo University Hospital in Ouagadougou. Today, the little boy is safe. He has regained all his vitality and can play, run and jump without risk to his heart. He’s growing up well and his cheeks are looking good. Long and happy life to you dear Issa.

13/10/2020 – Little Issa needs your help

With the Covid-19 pandemic leading to the requisitioning of hospitals and the suspension of certain surgical operations, the list of children awaiting treatment has grown dangerously long in the various countries where our association is active. This is particularly the case in Burkina Faso, where the heart of little Issa, soon to be 3, can wait no longer.

Issa is out of breath

Born with a high fever, Issa suffered, at just 5 months old, a new rise in temperature accompanied by significant weight loss. Examinations carried out at CHU Tengandogo revealed the sad truth: Issa suffered from persistent ductus arteriosus. In other words, the ductus arteriosus, a small vessel located between the pulmonary artery and the aorta and essential to the life of a fetus bathed in amniotic fluid, did not close at birth as it should have. Such cardiac pathology requires rapid intervention!

Hope awaits in Burkina Faso

In Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, there is now a virtually autonomous cardiac surgery medical team. Over the years, a top-notch surgical team has been built up at CHU Tengandogo under the leadership of Dr Adama Sawadogo. The surgeon belongs to this young generation of talented, committed practitioners who are setting an example for African surgery. Dr. Sawadogo and his team were trained in Europe, Senegal and Vietnam by local teams trained by La Chaîne de l’Espoir. Accompanying missions have also contributed to their training. Thanks to this long-term effort,Issa will be able to undergo surgery at home, in Burkina Faso, in complete autonomy by Adama Sawadogo and his team.

An operation too expensive for his family

Unfortunately, beyond these combined skills, the heart operation that Issa so badly needs comes with an incompressible cost that is too high for his family: over 3,000 euros. The boy’s father, a construction worker, leads a difficult life, and his resources are insufficient to finance the operation that will close the ductus arteriosus and save his son. That’s why we’re calling on you, and we know that once again you’ll be there!
