International Youth Day 2023
Why an International Youth Day?
According to the United Nations Youth Report 2020, there are 1.2 billion young people between the ages of 15 and 24 on the planet, representing 15.5% of the world’s population. This highly committed generation is mobilizing all its resources to demand that companies and governments tackle issues such as racial inequalities, socio-economic and climate change. With the aim of challenging international communities to create a world in which everyone can flourish.
That’s why, since the proclamation of International Youth Day in 1999, the United Nations General Assembly has designated August 12th to young people around the world around a variety of themes.
The theme of this 2023 edition is: “Green Skills For Youth: Towards A Sustainable World”.. Faced with this climate crisisthe world is embarking on a green transition. A transition towards a sustainable and respectful ecology that also meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The aim of this International Youth Day 2023 is therefore to develop people’s green skills, i.e. “the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to live, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society”. These green skills are relevant for people of all ages, but they are particularly important for young people, who can contribute to the green transition over a longer period of time.
“To encourage youth to educate and cultivate themselves is to build a better society.” This quote from Esther Johnson highlights the importance of youth to a nation, a continent and the world as a whole.
International Youth Day: what is the role of La Chaîne de l’Espoir?
Since 1994, La Chaîne de l’Espoir has been working to strengthen healthcare systems to give everyone, and particularly children the same chances of survival and development. Supporting youth is more than a moral obligation, it is a prerequisite for achieving the United Nations 2030 goals s health and well-being of children.
The 2023 edition on ecological transition is not the core of our actions, but we are focusing on other issues linked to the day international youth day such aseducationeducation sexual healthsexual malnutrition or poverty.
We can mention ouraccess to healthcare and the fight against poverty in Nepal.
Indeed, since 2011, La Chaîne de l’Espoir has been working in this country to help children who are exposed to the dangers of the street. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, and the first victims of these difficulties are the children. They have no access to health careThey have no access to health care, roam the streets and are tempted to leave their homes in search of a better life in the capital, Kathmandu. This exposes them to human traffickingtrafficking forced labor andsexual exploitation.
With our local partner Child Protection Centers and Services (CPCS), we are active in 34 schools and 4 health centers Our activities include: sexuality prevention, raising awareness of male and female hygiene, taking charge of and monitoring children’s health care…
