South-South Cooperation: Senegalese team in Burkina Faso to operate and train

Together with Senegalese doctors, La Chaîne de l'Espoir supports the development of pediatric cardiac surgery in Burkina Faso.

In January 2021, the first open-heart operations took place in Burkina Faso. La Chaîne de l’Espoir, a partner in this medical first, continues to support the development of cardiac surgery in this West African country. The latest example is the mission of a Senegalese medical team to Ouagadougou to operate on heart patients and thus contribute to the training of their Burkinabe counterparts.

Thirteen heart patients operated on by Senegalese and Burkina Faso teams

As part of its support for the development of cardiac surgery in Burkina Faso, a medical team from the Centre de Chirurgie Cardio Pédiatrique Cuomo (CCPC) in Dakar, Senegal, was present at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Tengandogo in Ouagadougou from July 16 to 28, 2022.

Led by Pr Gabriel Ciss, cardiac surgeon and head of the thoracic and cardiovascular surgery department at CHU Fann, this medical mission enabledthirteen patients suffering from cardiac pathologies to be operated on. For the occasion, Pr Gabriel Ciss was accompanied by a four-person medical team:

  • Étienne Sene, anesthetist,
  • Mohamed Leye, cardiologist,
  • Sada Wane, instrumentalist,
  • Samba Camara Diene, pump attendant.

Another successful example of South-South cooperation

Over and above the operations themselves, this mission was an opportunity for the CCPC medical team to contribute its medical expertise and pass on its skills through the analysis of 58 cases of patients suffering from various complex congenital pathologies and valvulopathies. This is further proof of the relevance of South-South cooperation, where local medical teams initially trained by La Chaîne de l’Espoir also contribute to the training of their peers, with our association fully encouraging and supporting such initiatives.

The mission was visited by the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Robert Lucien Jean Claude Kargougou, who welcomed and encouraged the teams.

A new pediatric cardiac surgery mission by La Chaîne de l’Espoir in Burkina Faso began on Sunday September 25 and will end on October 5. Paul Neville and Alain Chantepie from Tours University Hospital.
