Since 2018, in Jordan, La Chaîne de l’Espoir has been supporting prevention, screening, training and care concerning orthopedic birth defects. Our action is being strengthened today with the launch of a national campaign for the detection of developmental hip dysplasia (DHD) from which children can suffer. Explanations.

A campaign deployed in 4 Jordanian provinces

With the support of Prof. Firas Al Hawwari, Jordan’s Minister of Health, we are launching a national screening campaign for DDH, a congenital malformation in which the hip bones are abnormally developed. This pathology can result in simple instability of the joint or, in the most serious cases, lead to complete dislocation of the child’s hip. In the absence of appropriate medical treatment, DDH can be extremely disabling.

The launch of this detection campaign is part of the program run by our association and co-financed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). It illustrates a significant step towards the implementation of a DDH identification protocol so that children, whether Jordanian or refugee, can benefit from care adapted to their pathologies.

Aware of the serious consequences of not treating DDH, we have joined forces with the Jordanian Ministry of Health to launch a series of campaigns to screen for this congenital condition in four governorates. The first such initiative has just taken place over three days at the Princess Basma Comprehensive Health Center in Amman. This was a crucial step in establishing a solid basis for activating the screening protocol mentioned above.

An official ceremony to launch the campaign

To launch this first detection campaign in Amman, an official ceremony was held in Jordan on Monday January 22, 2024, attended by guests from AFD, healthcare professionals, representatives from the Jordanian Ministry of Health and public health “advocates”.

This event was an opportunity to present the main components of our national DDH screening campaign:

Activating the protocol for a single approach to ensure consistency and efficiency across different health centers,
Creating a centralized data hub for real-time data sharing and analysis, facilitating informed decision-making at local and national levels,
Training and capacity building: Orthopedists and radiologists trained in Graf techniques – the most widely used and practiced in the world for ultrasound screening for DDH – apply the skills they have acquired, improving overall competence in the identification of DDH.

This initiative is already producing concrete results. During the campaign at the Princess Basma Comprehensive Health Center in Amman, 158 children benefited from a medical consultation. Among them, 12 infants with hip dysplasia were treated with the Pavlik harness. This medical equipment, consisting of a system of interconnected straps, is used to treat growth disorders and congenital hip dislocations. These initial figures testify to the tangible impact of our DDH detection campaign for early identification of these congenital disorders.
