Côte d’Ivoire: First open-heart surgery at HME Bingerville soon?
In Côte d’Ivoire, congenital heart disease is one of the main causes of infant mortality. La Chaîne de l’Espoir has been working alongside theHôpital Mère-Enfant (HME) de Bingerville since it opened in 2018, and a few months ago carried out a technical and medical audit to study the development of a pediatric cardiac surgery activity there.
The ambition is to perform the first open-heart surgery as soon as possible. ” Children suffering from heart disease are condemned to die… even though we know how to treat them! By improving care for this complex surgical specialty, we are also helping to raise the skills of our teams. ” Dr Gérard Babatasi, cardiac surgeon and head of cardiac surgery at Caen Normandie University Hospital, who took part in the mission as vice-president and volunteer for La Chaîne de l’Espoir.

Echoing this exploratory mission, the 9th Gala Dinner of the Children Of Africa Foundation, held on March 1, 2024 in Abidjan, was the occasion for a major announcement: during this charity event, Dominique Ouattara, First Lady of Côte d’Ivoire and also founder and president of the aforementioned Foundation, made official a project to build a new cardiac surgery wing within the Bingerville MCH so that children suffering from cardiac pathologies can undergo open-heart surgery.
Naturally, La Chaîne de l’Espoir will lend its support and expertise to this initiative.
