Burkina Faso: 7th reconstructive surgery mission in June 2021

La Chaîne de l'Espoir organized a reconstructive surgery mission from June 12 to 23, 2021 in Burkina Faso.

As part of the “Prevention and integrated care of children suffering from noma and maxillofacial pathologies in Burkina Faso” project , La Chaîne de l’Espoir and partner NGO Fondation Sentinelles organized a reconstructive surgery mission from June 12 to 23, 2021.

The mission, led by Professor Narcisse Zwetyenga, maxillo-facial surgeon and head of the maxillo-facial plastic and reconstructive surgery department at Dijon’s Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU), was carried out in collaboration with a team of Burkinabe surgeons and anesthetists at the Polyclinique Notre Dame de la Paix in Ouagadougou.

During this mission, 106 people benefited from a medical consultation, and 61 of them underwent surgery. The patients taken in charge are currently staying at the “Centre Sentinelles“, a reception facility managed by the Sentinelles Foundation, where they benefit from appropriate post-operative follow-up.

The mission was also an opportunity to contribute to the training of students on the Diplôme d’études spécialisées (DES) in maxillofacial surgery at the Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou. In concrete terms, they were able to take part in surgical operations and benefit from theoretical courses given by Professor Narcisse Zwetyenga.

This is the 7th and final mission organized by La Chaîne de l’Espoir as part of the 1st phase of the project “Prevention and integrated care of children suffering from noma and maxillofacial pathologies in Burkina Faso” co-financed by Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The second phase of this project, which will start on July 1, 2021, includes the organization of a new mission in December 2021.
