What kind of future could a 6-year-old who had become virtually blind as a result of congenital double cataracts hope for? Unable to keep up in class, stumbling at the slightest obstacle, growing up apart from his peers, young Kendy seemed destined for a future full of pitfalls. However, thanks to the early detection of visual disorders carried out as part of our school health program in his native Haiti, much has changed for him. Like 6 other children in need of urgent ophthalmological care, the little boy was operated on and fitted with corrective glasses free of charge. Today, he can spot a mosquito or thread a thread through the eye of a needle. More than sight, you have given Kendy the joy of an excellent education and the freedom to take part in age-appropriate activities. A new life is opening up for him.

03/19/2021 – In Haiti, Kendy is waiting for your help

Kendy is a 6-year-old boy living in Haiti. He lives with his brother and parents in Roche Pierre, in the Grand Anse region, some 300 kilometers from the capital Port-au-Prince. Kendy’s eyesight is very poor, and he suffers from a congenital double cataract, as he was born with 2 crystalline lenses that are insufficiently transparent…

An essential operation to ensure its future

Kendy is a solitary little boy, who often stays to himself, a little sad. Currently in 1st grade, he has great difficulty keeping up in class because of his pathology. He even finds it hard to play with his classmates, because he stumbles, gets up, tries to run but runs into the slightest obstacle.

Only by regaining his sight will Kendy be able to attend school under excellent conditions and discover the joys of children’s games.

Thanks to early detection, Kendy’s sight can still be saved!
Good news: Kendy can be operated on. The little boy’s condition has been diagnosed early enough to be treated. The opaque crystalline lens will be removed from each eye and a lens implanted in its place.

Like Kendy, in Haiti, over 400 children suffering from vision, language or behavioral disorders are screened every year thanks to our school health programs. After launching our 1st project in Thailand in 1994 to help educate the most vulnerable, we refocused our socio-educational actions around 3 pillars: awareness-raising, screening and essential care.

Kendy and the other children are counting on you
Thanks to this constant follow-up, we have identified 6 other children who need urgent eye care. Together with you, we’re going to offer all these schoolchildren the surgery that will restore their sight and provide them with the corrective glasses they need.

The budget for taking care of each child is 775 euros, making a total of 5,425 euros. But 775 euros is almost the average wage in Haiti. If we do nothing, these 6 children will slowly sink into total darkness…

With your help, we can operate on these 7 children and restore their sight.

Thank you for giving them the light!
