Gracy underwent surgery
03/24/20 – “Gracy has an ogre’s appetite”.
At the beginning of the year, Gracy, a little girl from Madagascar, was welcomed to La Réunion to undergo open-heart surgery at the CHU Félix Guyon in St-Denis. Now back on her native island, Gracy has regained weight and is catching up on her stunted growth. As her Reunionese host family pointed out after her operation,“Gracy has an ogre’s appetite“.
In Madagascar, we plan to create a new unit dedicated to cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery at the Soavinandriana hospital in Tananarive. Ultimately, this will enable us to perform open-heart surgery on cardiac children like Gracy, in their own homes, thus avoiding family separation and air travel.
29/01/20 – Gracy, 2, to undergo surgery on Reunion Island
The medical unit recently opened on Réunion in September is responsible for treating Madagascan children requiring open-heart surgery.
This is the case of Gracy, a 2-year-old Malagasy girl in need of urgent surgery. She will be transferred to La Réunion on February 2 for surgery on February 5. As soon as she arrives at Saint-Denis airport, a host family will take care of her throughout her treatment.
In partnership with the Centre Hospitalier de Soavinandriana (CENHOSOA) in Madagascar and the CHU Félix Guyon in St Denis, Réunion, this branch aims to provide a medical solution for Madagascan children suffering from complex cardiopathies that cannot yet be treated in Madagascar.
The La Réunion branch is headed by Dr Jean-François Delambre, Head of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department at CHU Félix Guyon. Dr. Jean-François Delambre has been involved for over 20 years in the program to treat childhood heart disease in Madagascar, alongside Dr. Nivohanta Ramamonjisoa, coordinator of La Chaîne de l’Espoir in Madagascar.
Until now, La Chaîne de l’Espoir had no alternative but to transfer small patients to mainland France for surgery in its partner facilities.
Chaîne de l’Espoir plans to create a new unit dedicated to cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery at the Soavinandriana hospital in Tananarive, enabling open-heart surgery for children with heart disease in Madagascar.
