Kossi can now walk without pain.

The end of pain for Kossi

Mariela, open-heart surgery in Madagascar

For Kossi and all his family, the operation on his inguinal hernia was a huge relief. His parents are both dressmakers and earn the equivalent of 15 euros a month. They couldn’t afford to pay for their little boy’s operation. The 5-year-old was suffering from intense groin pain. He also lived under the constant threat of hernia strangulation, which would cause severe intestinal obstruction. As soon as his parents heard that a travelling mission from La Chaîne de l’Espoir was stopping off near their village, 150 km from the capital, Cotonou, they made arrangements for Kossi to receive a consultation. Kossi was operated on in the days that followed by surgeons and the volunteer medical team from La Chaîne de l’Espoir. Today, he’s doing well and the incessant pain has completely disappeared.

During this mission, 433 young Beninese received consultations and 80 underwent surgery.

Help Kossi access quality healthcare!

Kossi, a 5-year-old boy, suffers from a congenital inguinal hernia. He cries, screams and is extremely uncomfortable with every movement he makes. At any moment, his condition could worsen. In the event ofstrangulation of the hernia, his life will be seriously threatened. But no medical treatment is possible, and only surgery can save him.

Kossi lives away from care

Faced with the cost of the operation, over a hundred euros, Kossi’s parents reluctantly had to give it up… Seamstresses, they earn only the equivalent of €15 a month.

Living in theIchagba region, 200 km from the capital Cotonou, Kossi and his parents are also far from any health infrastructure.

To alleviate the difficulty of accessing healthcare, La Chaîne de l’Espoir organizes annual itinerant missions to Benin. And soon, a specialized medical team will be criss-crossing the country to perform outpatient surgery. Other children, like Kossi, will also be able to benefit fromfree access to quality surgical care close to home.

1 itinerant mission = 300 to 800 consultations and over 100 children saved!

On site, our volunteer doctors will team up with their Togolese and Beninese counterparts. They will first consult hundreds of children suffering from simple pathologies such as cleft lips, club feet, knee deviations… then operate on more complex cases, like Kossi’s.

Travel, medicines, consumables, equipment, operations, care – all this represents a cost of 38,000 euros. A very high amount indeed, but essential to help little Kossi and a hundred other children in great suffering.

Together, let’s mobilize for this little Beninese boy and for the hundreds of families waiting for a diagnosis, consultation or operation.

Thank you again for your generosity!
