Afghanistan: exceptional aid from the Fondation des Hôpitaux

In response to the current health crisis in Afghanistan, the Fondation des Hôpitaux has decided to support the work of La Chaîne de l'Espoir in the country, helping to improve access to healthcare for children and women. In concrete terms, this support takes the form of an exceptional grant of 300,000 euros. Explanations.

Hard-to-reach surgical care

On Tuesday November 26, 2024, the Fondation des Hôpitaux, represented by its President Brigitte Macron, Vice-President Anne Barrère, and Managing Director Marion Cinalli, presented a check for 300,000 euros to La Chaîne de l’Espoir.

Dr. Éric Cheysson, our Chairman, and Anouchka Finker, our Managing Director, were on hand to receive this exceptional donation in support of theFrench Medical Institute for Mother and Child (IMFE) in Kabul. Built in 2006 by La Chaîne de l’Espoir, this hospital is today one of the last health structures capable of providing surgical care to children and women in Afghanistan.

It’s worth noting that when Afghan women come from remote provinces to be operated on, they benefit from complete, free care at the Pavillon des Femmes et des Enfants, a building adjoining the IMFE, including accommodation, food, transport costs and psychosocial support, with hospitalization of course taking place at the IMFE.

Our action in favor of Afghan women is evolving

Given the extreme deterioration in Afghanistan’s health situation – with maternal and neonatal mortality rates 8 times higher than global targets – La Chaîne de l’Espoir, through the IMFE and the Pavillon des Femmes et des Enfants, is mobilizing to provide access to obstetric care for high-risk pregnant women, particularly those belonging to the most vulnerable populations (internally displaced persons, refugees, returnees living on the outskirts of Kabul, etc.). The aim is to enable patients to benefit fromfree, comprehensive care from the moment they are admitted to the end of their treatment.

Renewed support from the Fondation des Hôpitaux

The exceptional donation of 300,000 euros by the Fondation des Hôpitaux will support three health establishments in Kabul, where access to care is limited and essential services such as prenatal and postnatal care are lacking. La Chaîne de l’Espoir will provide equipment and medicines, while enhancing the skills of medical staff to improve care.

This is not the first time that the Fondation des Hôpitaux has chosen to support our association and the actions we are carrying out in Afghanistan. Already in 2022 (100,000 euros) and 2023 (300,000 euros), this organization, which is behind the Pièces Jaunes operation, gave us its support. Our thanks to the Fondation des Hôpitaux for its renewed confidence!

A benchmark for medical and surgical excellence meeting international standards, the IFME has saved the lives of thousands of children and provided care for over 1.5 million Afghans since its creation. Find out more about the diversity of La Chaîne de l’Espoir’s actions in Afghanistan.
